This poll ran from July 2003 to November 2003
If that's all we have to worry about then we are not doing so bad are we!
I have said it before and I will say it again Barney is a nice place to live.
[glow=red,2,300]My two penneth worth:- [/glow]
(go and make yourself a cup of tea, this may take a while!)
These are my opinions and as we still live in a (mostly) free and democratic country I am going to publish them here and if you don't like them or don't agree with them then I really don't care!
Drink - The council and the police make a lot of fuss about late licences and tend to blame this for most of the vandalism and late night anti-social behaviour. Maybe they have a point but having enjoyed a late drink myself on more than one occasion and managed to make it home without smashing anything or hurting anyone then I conclude that (you are going to love this!).
The council needs to chill out a bit, the town promotes itself as a tourist town yet wants to deny visitors the same amenities other (and smaller) towns offer. The people who cause most of the trouble are either born trouble makers and time of night is not an issue (this is a social problem) or more likely they simply cannot take their drink. This should highlight to the landlords of the town their responsibility not allow to people to drink to destruction, this could help. The police just don't want to police this town on a night, maybe they could show more of presence around kicking out time, I still think the sight of a uniform has a very sobering effect on most people.
Drugs - Not a big problem in town really, have a look at other places.
Crime - Same thing really, it's never good to be the victim of any crime but we are living in one of the safest towns in the country.
Litter - I hate it, I have never understood what anybody gets out of dumping rubbish. What is it? bone idleness? rebellion? I agree with the yank who thinks that if you take care of the small problems the big ones don't develop.
Lack of housing - Lack of affordable housing for younger residents maybe, young families that move away very rarely come back you know. Families are the life blood of any town and the more Barney people we can keep in the town the better. There are plenty of houses available, you have a look at the amount of for sale boards nailed onto houses next time you are out and about, no problem with that but look at the prices that go with them! unbelievable really. Eventually this town will be full of commuters, holiday homes and pensioners. When that happens who is going to buy the over priced beans from Safeways.
Traffic - Yes there is a lot of traffic in town but it seems well managed. There are one or two hot spots that could do with calming but is basically OK. This is one of the reasons why I don't think it is a good idea for the town to get a bypass.
Parking - Shocking! but this is one of the penalties of living in a reasonably affluent town - everybody has a car (or two) and they all want to use them! More public responsibility needed maybe? (I'm talking about you people who live and work in the town and still drive to work).
No youth activities - True enough, can't argue with that, don't know what to do about it though.
Pubs closing down - Very worrying, having slurped my way through a couple of decades in Barney pubs I am very concerned, the amount of people out on a weekend at the moment must have dropped by 90% since the 80's. What's the cause, backward thinking council wanting 50's drinking laws? Expensive drink in the pubs? Cheap cans and everybody stopping in? Breweries putting the rents up? What ever it is every time we lose another pub we lose another little bit of our character and history.
No chips after nine - My favorite gripe this, being one of those people who have never been afraid of a takeaway or two it galls the life out me that I can't get our favorite national dish in this town after nine. I've sort of come to terms with it now but you can see the look of incredulity on visitors faces when they ask where they can get a bag of chips only to be told "all shut".
Still here! well done, as I said 2 hours ago if this is all we have to worry about then it can't be a bad place to live, can it?
